For a document writer or editor, moving a paragraph or any piece of information around the articles could be a tedious job. However, with these easy shortcut key solutions, you can save a lot of effort to be spent on more value added tasks.
There are two simple Keyboard shotcut key solutions to be discussed here. First is the way to move a whole paragraph up or down in the articles in simple steps. To accomplish this, just put your cursor anywhere in the paragraph (not even need to highlight the whole paragraph) that you intend to move, just press and hold down the Shift+Alt+Up/Down key to move it to the desired location freely without hassle. How to Remove or Delete AutoPlay Handler from the Options List in XP and Vista

Each item in the AutoPlay list is a handler installed by various applications to show as an option for a particular events or content types such as Pictures, Videos, and Mixed.
Windows by default has several AutoPlay handlers, and other third-party programs, especially media player such as MusicMatch Jukebox and RealPlayer, and image burning software such as Nero will add their own AutoPlay handlers and shortcuts into the list. Over the time, the AutoPlay list can get longer and longer, and some entries can become invalid or orphaned when the program has been uninstalled by the AutoPlay handlers are not removed.
To delete and remove an entry or item from AutoPlay menu, its corresponding handler in the registry has to be deleted. To make the management of AutoPlay entries easier, such as to delete and remove an unwanted or unneeded entry in AutoPlay menu, an AutoPlay cleanup utility is available.
CleanHandlers is a AutoPlay handlers cleanup utility that able to scan and find invalid AutoPlay entries and remove those junk handlers automatically. The CleanHandlers also allows users to delete and remove the AutoPlay items that they no longer needed or doesn’t want the items to appear on the menu list.
It’s also possible to manually edit the system registry to remove the AutoPlay handlers. The AutoPlay handlers are stored at the following registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\Handlers\
Above registry key stores handler settings, which is the action to perform when selected on AutoPlay.

Expanded Recent Documents history list in Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 is useful as a quick shortcut to open recently used files, spreadsheets and presentations. But for users who handle sensitive or private documents, “Recent Documents” history will expose the trace and existence of otherwise hidden files. If you are sure that you don’t want to utilize the enhanced Recent Documents feature in Office 2007, there is a way to disable the history tracking on opened files.
Use steps in guide below to disable Recent Documents history list for good so that Office 2007 applications will not keep track and save the recently opened files history, also known as MRU list.
- Click on Office button, and then click on Word Options (in Word 2007) or Excel Options (in Excel 2007) or PowerPoint Options (in PowerPoint 2007) in the bottom of Office Menu.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Scroll down to the Display section.
- Set the value for Show this number of Recent Documents: to 0 (zero).
- Click OK button.
- Repeat steps above again for each and every Word 2007, Excel 2007 and PowerPoint 2007 that .
The “Recent Documents” list will appear blank forever.
It’s also possible to set a registry value to enable a policy that prevent displaying of any MRU lists. However, note that the policy will affect and honor by most Microsoft programs, such as all versions of Office and its individual products, so if you use this registry trick to turn of the policy no most recently used files history will be saved for all programs, including MRUs on the File menu and the Save and Open dialog boxes.
- Run Registry Editor (regedit).
- Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\ExplorerIf “Explorer” is not existed, create a new Key for “Explorer”.
- Create a DWORD value with the key NoRecentDocsHistory and set the value to 1.
All “Recent Documents” list will not be saved and all display will turn blank.

To create a contact group is pretty simple especially with the new Gmail interface for IE7 and Firefox 2. Follow the steps below: -
1. Click the “Contacts” item from the left-hand navigation list
2. Create a new group by clicking the group items
3. Name your group by entering the text into a prompted message box
4. Once you have created the group, you can add your group members from your contact list into the group. You can also add people to groups by clicking a group name and then typing email addresses or names in the search box at the bottom of the middle pane.
Grouping makes your emailing task easier, more convenient and error free. All recipients in the group will receive your email every time you send your email to the particular Group.

Hide Unread Email Messages Notification on XP Logon Welcome Screen

For example, “1 unread email messages”. The unread email messages count also appear when system is locked, and user is required to enter the password to enter the desktop again.
The count of number of unread messages is generated for each users individually, and normally will be shown after user starts to use Microsoft’s related email clients or services, such as Microsoft Outlook and Windows Live Hotmail. The count takes into account all unread messages from programs like Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Hotmail, and etc, depending on how these programs are used and setup.
It’s pretty useless and something annoying to display the number of unread mail messages available, especially when it also display user’s email address together. It’s possible to to remove these list and count of unread email messages on the Welcome Screen page with the following tricks.
The most easy way is to use TweakUI PowerToys, which the TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe setup file can be downloaded from Microsoft Download Center . After installing the TweakUI, run the program, locate and select Logon in the left pane. Then click on Unread Mail. Unselect and uncheck the Show unread mail on Welcome screen option. Users can choose whether to apply the new setting (without unread email count) only to user’s account or for all users on the computer.
It’s also possible to modify the registry directly to get rid of the unread email messages count on Logon Welcome Screen. To do so, run Registry Editor (regedit.exe), and the navigate to the one of the following registry keys:
For current logged on user:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
For all users on the computer:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
On the right pane, find a value data named MessageExpiryDays. If it’s not found, create a new DWORD key named MessageExpiryDays. Set the value of “MessegaExpiryDays” to 0, and save the setting.
Once disabled, unread emails count notification will no longer be displayed.

The hyperlink will reveal which email accounts the messages are from and the count of the unread mails from each of e-mail providers contains. Only users with supported email clients such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Live (MSN) Messenger will be shown this unread e-mail messages feature.
However, the unread email messages count can sometimes be wrong, incorrect or invalid. For example, there is still number of unread mails been shown even though all emails have been read. There are various reasons why the number of the count can be wrong. One of the condition that commonly cause the incorrect count of unread emails on Welcome Screen during logon is usage of computer by multiple users, especially when somebody else login to their Windows Live Messenger (MSN Messenger) or Hotmail using your user account. And the unread mail counts will display the combined total of all supported mail clients, including count from other users’ messenger account.
To correct and reset the unread email messages count on the hyperlink of Welcome Screen, the most easy way is to use TweakUI PowerToys, which the TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe setup file can be downloaded from Microsoft Download Center. After installing the TweakUI, run the program, and scroll down to select Repair on the left pane. In the dropdown box on the right pane, select Repair Unread Mail Count and click Repair Now button.

Posted by Freaks Labels: XP Tips n TricksWindows XP generate thumbnail preview for images, pictures, photos, videos, HTML pages and other media clips with format supported by the operating system. The image or media preview is shown in the Details pane on the left of Windows Explorer, or when the files are viewed in Thumbnails view.
However, some users may not want or prefer the automatic preview and thumbnail generation when browsing files list. The preview hide the icon of the files, and doesn’t allow users to instant know the format or extension of the files, such as whether a video is of .avi, .wmv or .mpg format. Beside, the process to show the thumbnail preview may slow down the file listing process when opening folder with video files. Beside, the preview on no codec or corrupted movie or video clip (i.e. no index from a partial download) may cause system problems such as Windows XP stops responding or freezing with 100% CPU utilization, and prevent users from deleting, renaming or moving the file until the file is completely loaded. The error happens because Windows needs a proper codec in order to correctly and validly create a thumbnail for video media. Without codec, or codec is broken or buggy will have problem.
To turn off, remove or disable video and media thumbnail preview in Windows XP, and fix above issues relating to video (AVI) problems, simply issue the following command in a Command Prompt window. To open Command Prompt window, type “Cmd” in Start -> Run box.
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
It’s important to note that once the command above is run, the thumbnail preview will be disabled and will not be shown or displayed for all video, movie and other media files. And, users also lose the ability to see the summary properties in the tooltip and file properties dialog for AVI, WMA, WMV, ASF and WAV files.
To re-enable, or turn off the media preview again, use the following command:
regsvr32 shmedia.dll

How to Turn Off Image Preview Thumbnail and Disable Windows Picture and Fax Viewer in Windows XP
Posted by Freaks Labels: XP Tips n TricksWindows XP displays thumbnail style of preview for images, pictures and photos in Windows Explorer’s Details section on left pane when users select a pic. The preview will also automatically created and displayed when users browse and view a folder in Thumbnail view. Beside, when open or double click on a format associated with popular graphic formats, the photos or pictures will open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer instead of user preferred or favorite image viewer or editor, due to the fact that the default action on image file is to preview it using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
In order to turn off and disable thumbnail preview feature of images, photos, graphics, and pictures in Windows XP, and to disable the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and remove graphic files format associations with the default viewer comes with XP, open Command Prompt window (type Cmd in Run command box) and type the following command, follow by ‘Enter’.
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
shimgvw.dll known is Windows Picture and Fax Viewer Library shimgvw. After running above command, all photos and images will be displayed as just icons, and double click to open a graphic will launch your personal favorite default image viewer instead.
To re-enable image preview and turn off Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, run the following command and hit ‘Enter’ key:
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
If the above trick doesn’t work, it’s also possible to achieve the same result to disable image preview and Windows Picture and Fax viewer via system registry. To do so, run Registry Editor by typing “regedit” in Run command box from Start Menu, and then navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\
ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\ShellImagePreview
Note: Wrap to 2 lines for readability.
Before performing the next step, it’s wise to backup by exporting the registry key. To do so, simply right click on ShellImagePreview and choose Export, and save it to a file. Then in the right pane, double click on (Default) registry value name, and clear the value of the “(Default)” so that the new value data is blank (empty space). Original value is defaulted to “{e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}”.
To restore the preview action on images and pictures files, set back the value to {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}, or simply restore the backup registry file saved by executing it.

In Firefox in Windows operating system, when pressing the backspace key, the web page active in the window or tab will be going back one page, an action that similar to when the both Firefox and IE browser’s “Back” button, while Shift+Backspace will go forward. The backspace key is mapped to “Back” function in Firefox for Windows is for consistency with Internet Explorer.
On the other hand, Firefox in Linux by default does not map the backspace key to “Go Back” function to improve consistency with other applications running on Linux. Instead, the page will scroll up or down (when pressing Shift+Backspace key together).
The backspace as Back button feature can be easily turned on or off depending on user preference. Thus, Firefox for Windows users can disable the back function mapping to backspace key, and Firefox for Linux can enable the backspace to map to Back function easily, by using the following Firefox pref.
Type about:config in Firefox Location Box, and then confirm the warning message. Then locate the following preference name:
browser.backspace_action
Change the “browser.backspace_action” to one of the following values to reflect your intention on how the Backspace key should behaves:
0: Pressing [Backspace] will go back a page in the session history and [Shift]+[Backspace] will go forward. (Default in Windows)
1: Pressing [Backspace] will scroll up a page in the current document and [Shift]+[Backspace] will scroll down. Except Camino that does not implement any behavior for the value 1, which is unmapped. (Default in Linux builds before 2006-12-07)
Any other integer number: Any other integer value will simply unmap the backspace key. In Linux builds after 2006-12-07, the default is 2.

There are quite a few services you can disable from starting automatically.
This would be to speed up your boot time and free resources.
They are only suggestions so I suggestion you read the description of each one when you run Services
and that you turn them off one at a time.
Some possibilities are:
- Alerter - Sends alert messages to specified users that are connected to the server computer.
- Application Management - Allows software to tap directly into the Add/Remove Programs feature via the Windows Installer technology.
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service - The Background Intelligent Transfer service is used by programs (such as Windows AutoUpdate) to download files by using spare bandwidth.
- Clipbook - ClipBook permits you to cut and paste text and graphics over the network.
- Error Reporting Service - Allows applications to send error reports to Microsoft in the event of an application fault.
- Fast User Switching - Windows XP allows users to switch quickly between accounts, without requiring them to log off.
- Help and Support - Allows the XP Built-in Help and Support Center to run.
- IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service - You don't need this if you have other software to create CDs.
- Indexing Service - Indexes contents and properties of files on local and remote computers; provides rapid access to files through flexible querying language.
- IP SEC - Manages IP security policy and starts the ISAKMP/Oakley (IKE) and the IP security driver. If you are not on a domain, you likely don't need this running.
- Messenger - Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This is how a lot of pop-up windows start appearing on your desktop.
- Net Logon - Supports pass-through authentication of account logon events for computers in a domain. If you are not on a domain, you don't need this running
- Network DDE - Provides network transport and security for Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) for programs running on the same computer or on different computers.
- NT LM Security Support Provider - Provides security to remote procedure call (RPC) programs that use transports other than named pipes.
- Performance Logs and Alerts - Collects performance data from local or remote computers based on preconfigured schedule parameters, then writes the data to a log or triggers an alert. If you don't need to monitor your performance logs, then you don't need this service.
- Portable Media Serial Number - Retrieves the serial number of any portable music player connected to your computer
- QOS RSVP - Provides network signaling and local traffic control setup functionality for QoS-aware programs and control applets.
- Remote Desktop Help Session Manager - Manages and controls Remote Assistance. If you are not using Remote Desktop you don't need this service.
- Remote Registry - Enables remote users to modify registry settings on this computer.
- Routing & Remote Access - Offers routing services to businesses in local area and wide area network environments. Allows dial-in access.
- Secondary Login - Enables starting processes under alternate credentials. This is what allows you to run an application as another user.
- Smart Card - Manages access to smart cards read by this computer.
- Smart Card Helper - Enables support for legacy non-plug and play smart-card readers used by this computer.
- SSDP Discovery Service - Enables discovery of UPnP devices on your home network.
- TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper - Enables support for NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) service and NetBIOS name resolution. This should not be needed in today's network environment.
- Telnet - Enables a remote user to log on to this computer and run programs, and supports various TCP/IP Telnet clients.
- Uninterruptible Power Supply Service - Manages an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) connected to the computer.
- Universal Plug and Play Device Host - Provides support to host Universal Plug and Play devices
- Upload Manager - Manages synchronous and asynchronous file transfers between clients and servers on the network.
- Volume Shadow Copy Service - Manages and implements Volume Shadow Copies used for backup and other purposes.
- Web Client - Enables Windows-based programs to create, access, and modify non-local files across the Internet.
- Wireless Zero Configuration - Provides automatic configuration for the 802.11 adapters
- WMI Performance Adapter - Provides performance library information from WMI HiPerf providers.

- Double click Services
- Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"

- Click the STOP button
- Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar Click OK

Think and Grow Rich! (ISBN 1-59330-200-2) is a classic motivational book. Written by Napoleon Hill and inspired by Andrew Carnegie, it was published in 1937 at the end of the Great Depression.
